国防高等研究計画局（Defense Advanced Research Project Agency： DARPA）のスティーブン・ウォーカー長官（Steven Walker）は1月8日、ピーター・ハイナム氏（Peter Highnam）を副長官として指名したと発表した。ハイナム氏はDARPA副長官として、人工知能やデータ分析論、通信、偵察、電子戦争、兵士の健康を含む様々な分野で重要な研究の進展を支援する。同氏は、2017年1月以来、DARPA副長官を務め、今月退任したステファニー・トンプキンス氏（Stefanie Tompkins）の後任となる。ハイナム氏は、1999～2003年にDARPAのプログラム・マネジャーを務めた他、これまでに、国家情報長官室（Office of the Director of National Intelligence: ODNI）、ODNIの情報先端研究プロジェクト活動（Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity: IARPA）、厚生省（Department of Health and Human Services: HHS）に務めた経験がある。
