電気電子技術者協会（Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers: IEEE）は、スマートグリッドに関する標準規格について、4件の更新と、通信・運用能力に関する新たな標準規格開発作業を発表した。更新されたのは、①IEEE1815-2012　電力システム通信の標準規格：分散ネットワークプロトコル（Standard for Electric Power Systems Communications – Distributed Network Protocol(DNP3)）、②IEEE1366-2012 配電の信頼性指標のためのIEEEガイド（Guide for Electric Power Distribution Reliability Indices）、③IEEE 1377-2012ユーティリティ産業用計測通信プロトコル・アプリケーション層（終末装置データテーブル）向けIEEE標準規格（Standard for Utility Industry Metering Communication Protocol Application Layer）（End Device Data Tables）、④IEEE C37.104-2012 交流送配電線用遮断器の自動再投入のためのIEEEガイド（Guide for Automatic Reclosing of Circuit Breakers for AC Distribution and Transmission Lines）、の4件である。また、新たな標準規格開発作業として、IEEE P1854 スマート配電アプリケーションのためのガイド（Guide for Smart Distribution Applications）が発表された。
