国立癌研究所（NCI：National Cancer Institute）の14代所長としてハロルド・バームス氏（Harold Varmus）が就任した。1993年から1999年までは国立衛生研究所（NIH：National Institutes of Health）の所長として活躍した他、最近はニューヨーク市にあるメモリアル・スローン・ケタリング癌センター（Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center）の所長を務めた。なお、同氏は1989年にノーベル生理学・医学賞を共同受賞している。
