国立衛生研究所（National Institutes of Health: NIH）の国立画像生物医学・生物工学研究所（National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering: NIBIB）は7月31日、大学生チームを対象とした生体工学の設計コンペ、「生物医学系大学生チームによる設計（Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams: DEBUT）チャレンジ」の勝者を発表した。同チャレンジは、①診断機器（Diagnostic Devices）、②治療機器（Therapeutic Devices）、③困窮層及び身体障害者支援技術（Technology to Aide Underserved Populations and Individuals with Disabilities）の3部門に分かれ、それぞれ①カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校（University of California Los Angeles）、②ジョンズホプキンス大学（Johns Hopkins University）、③ワシントン大学セントルイス校（Washington University in St. Louis）が勝者チームとなった。勝者チームにはそれぞれ1万ドルの賞金が贈られる。
