オークリッジ国立研究所（Oak Ridge National Laboratory: ORNL）は、「米国内の小型水力発電（Small Hydropower in the United States）」と題する報告書を発表した。米国内における小型水力発電（10メガワット以下）の最新状況をまとめたもので、「小型水力発電は、過去十年間における新たな水力発電の限定的な進展のほとんどを占めている」としている。報告書はエネルギー省（Department of Energy）の風水プログラム（Wind and Water Program）向けに作成された。国際連合工業開発機関（United Nations Industrial Development Organization）と小型水力発電国際センター（International Center on Small Hydropower）の要請に応える形で作成されたもので、2019年に公表される「世界小型水力発電報告（World Small Hydro Development Report）」に盛り込まれる。ORNLの報告書によれば、現在、420メガワットの新小型水力発電の開発（165プロジェクト）が計画されているという。​
