厚生省（Department of Health and Human Services）は12月21日、「医療IT　患者の安全活動及び監督計画（Health IT Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan）」を発表し、これに対するパブリック・コメントの募集を開始した（締め切りは2013年2月4日）。本計画は、医療ITを用いて患者の安全性を強化するための戦略や計画をまとめたもので、患者の安全に対する厚生省全体のコミットメントを示すものである。また本計画は、医学研究所（Institute of Medicine: IOM）が2011年の報告書「医療ITと患者の安全：より良いケアのためのより安全なシステムの構築（Health IT and Patient Safety: Building Safer Systems for Better Care）」で提示した勧告に対処した内容となっている。
