環境保護庁（Environmental Protection Agency: EPA）は11月2日、ビルにおける省エネ努力の成果を競う「2011年エネルギー・スター・全米省エネビルコンペ：ビルの戦い（2011 Energy Star national Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings）」で、中央フロリダ大学（University of Central Florida: UCF）が勝者となったと発表した。同コンペは、全国のビルにおける省エネ、燃料費削減、人間の健康と環境保護の取り組みを競うもので、今年で2回目の開催となる。UCFは主要構内の駐車場ビルの省エネに取り組み、駐車場内の照明機器の品質と効率性を改善するなどして、エネルギー消費を63.2％削減することに成功した。今回のコンペ参加ビル（245件）において、年間で合計520万ドルの燃料費が削減されたという。
