米国アカデミー（National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine）が発表した報告書「将来のバイオテクノロジー製品に備える（Preparing for Future Products of Biotechnology）」によれば、今後5～10年間に多数のバイオテクノロジー製品が登場すると予想され、それらの新製品の数と多様性は米国規制制度に大きな負担をもたらす可能性があるという。報告書は、環境保護庁（Environmental Protection Agency: EPA）、食品医薬品局（Food and Drug Administration: FDA）、農務省（U.S. Department of Agriculture）、バイオテクノロジー製品の規制に関与するその他の機関は、成長が予測される主要分野で、科学的能力やツール、専門知識を強化する必要があると報告書は指摘している。
