エミル・マイケル国防次官（研究・工学担当）（Emil Michael, Under Secretary of Defenses for Research and Engineering）は、米国の軍事的優位性の未来を定義する6つの重要技術分野（Critical Technology Areas: CTA）を発表した。6つのCTAは、研究・工学の最先端において、兵士に迅速で具体的な成果をもたらし、米国が世界で最も破壊力のある存在であり続けることを確実にすることを意図する。6つのCTAは、①応用人工知能（Applied Artificial Intelligence: AAI）、②バイオ製造（Biomanufacturing: BIO）、③紛争下の物流技術（Contested Logistics Technologies: LOG）、④量子及び戦地情報支配（Quantum and Battlefield Information Dominance: Q-BID）、⑤拡張型指向性エネルギー（Scaled Directed Energy: SCADE）、⑥拡張型極超音速（Scaled Hypersonics: SHY）で、現代の戦地で直面する最も急務な課題に対処するものである。これらの技術分野は、あらゆる場面で、兵士が敵対者による脅威を克服し、作戦上の優位性を維持する一助となると期待されている。
