IBM社（International Business Machines Corp）は4月16日、イリノイ大学アーバナ・シャンペーン校（University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign）のグレンジャー工学部（Grainger College of Engineering）との共同研究所「IBM-イリノイ・ディスカバリー・アクセラレータ機関（IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute）」を拡大し、量子コンピューティングと人工知能（AI）を融合させた次世代型スパコンを開発すると発表した。同大学の国立スパコン応用センター（National Center for Supercomputing Applications: NCSA）のデルタ（Delta）及びデルタAI（DeltaAI）スパコンの高性能計算環境と同社の量子プロセッサを統合し、量子・古典ハイブリッド環境におけるワークフロー管理ツールを構築する。従来型スパコンでは困難だった化学や凝縮系物理学、材料科学に関する基礎研究取り組みに併せ、アルゴリズムをシリコンに統合・実装する新研究分野「アルゴリズムズ・トゥ・シリコン・トゥ・システムズ（Algorithms-to-Silicon-to-Systems/AS2）」も立ち上げる。
