共同通信（AP）は3月25日、トランプ大統領が疾病対策予防センター（Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: CDC）の次期長官に、現職の長官代理スーザン・モナレス氏（Susan Monarez）を指名する方針を固めたと報じた。先に指名したデービッド・ウェルドン氏（David Weldon）は上院での承認が得られず、指名を取り下げた。医療高等研究計画局（Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health：ARPA-H）出身で、微生物学と免疫学の博士号を持つモナレス氏は、厚生省（Department of Health and Human Services）や国家安全保障会議（National Security Council: NSC）など、政府機関での豊富な経験がある。トランプ氏は、モナレス氏が厚生長官のロバート・F・ケネディ・ジュニア氏（Robert F. Kennedy Jr.）と緊密に協力すると表明しているが、一部のCDC職員からは、同氏の職員とのコミュニケーション不足を指摘する声も上がっているという。
